A Class 3 Individual DSC is issued to one person and identifies that person when they sign electronically.
Signing or signing & encryption?
Signing proves who approved a document or return. It is what most people need for ITR, GST, MCA and EPFO.
Signing & encryption adds a second certificate that lets portals lock (encrypt) documents so only the intended receiver can open them. Many eTender portals use this to keep bids sealed until opening. Buy it only if your portal or tender needs it.
Who is eligible
- Any individual with valid identity proof (PAN, and Aadhaar or other documents accepted by the CA)
- The applicant must complete verification personally; a DSC can't be applied for on someone else's behalf
Documents
See the interactive checklist. For most residents: PAN, Aadhaar-linked mobile for OTP, own email and mobile, and a camera for video verification.
Token
The certificate is stored on a USB cryptographic token that meets the current CCA requirements. A working compatible token can be reused. See USB tokens.
Validity and renewal
Validity is chosen at the time of order (CAs commonly offer 1 to 3 years). A DSC can't be extended; before expiry you apply for a new one and register it again on each portal.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use one DSC for ITR, GST and MCA?
Generally yes. A Class 3 individual signing certificate is accepted on these portals, but you must register it on each portal separately.
My Aadhaar mobile number is old. What can I do?
Update it at an Aadhaar centre, or ask whether the CA's PAN-based or document-based verification is available for you.
Can someone else apply for my DSC?
No. Verification is personal. Someone can help you with the steps, but you must complete OTP and video verification yourself.
